Pakistan's Olympic Hero Arshad Nadeem Returns Home to Unusual Rewards and Heartfelt Support

Pakistani athlete Arshad Nadeem made history at the Paris Olympic Games 2024 by winning the gold medal in the men's javelin throw final. With this victory, Arshad became the first athlete from Pakistan to win an Olympic gold in an individual event. However, since his return home, some of the rewards and attention he has received have surprised many.

One of the most talked-about rewards was when Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, awarded Arshad a buffalo and PKR 1 million (approximately INR 3 lakh). While this gesture was meant to honor his achievement, it has left some fans puzzled.

Another video circulating on social media shows people from the public visiting Arshad's home to personally give him cash. In the video, a citizen can be seen handing Arshad money while saying, "I urge the government to hand over cash rewards to Arshad the way I did. Often promises are made, but money is not delivered."

Many fans in India have expressed their disappointment upon seeing how Arshad has been treated since returning home.

Arshad Nadeem comes from the rural area of Khanewal in Punjab, where he had very limited resources for training and competing abroad. In his early days, his fellow villagers and relatives would donate money to help him participate in international competitions.

In an earlier gesture, Arshad's father-in-law, Muhammad Nawaz, gifted him a buffalo. Nawaz shared that when he decided to marry his daughter to Nadeem, Nadeem was a man of modest means but had a strong desire to succeed in sports. Nadeem would often train in the village fields, practicing his javelin throw.

"When we decided to marry our daughter to Nadeem six years ago, he was doing small jobs and running errands, but he was extremely passionate about his sport. He constantly practiced throwing the javelin at home and in the fields," Nawaz said.

Nawaz also expressed his happiness with Nadeem's success and fame, adding that the javelin thrower, who became Pakistan’s first individual Olympic medalist, is very respectful towards everyone.
