CrowdStrike Update Causes Big Problems for Businesses Worldwide

On Friday, a new update from the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike caused big problems for businesses all over the world.

CrowdStrike told NBC that they are working to undo the update that caused the issue. Later, they said they had fixed the problem.

CrowdStrike’s CEO, George Kurtz, said, “We are helping our customers who were affected by a problem in one update for Windows computers. Mac and Linux computers are not affected.”

He also said, “This is not a security problem or a cyberattack. We found the issue, fixed it, and sent out the solution.”

George Kurtz advised customers to check the support portal for the latest news and to contact their CrowdStrike representatives for help.

“Our team is working hard to make sure our customers are safe and everything is stable,” he added.

Many people reported technical problems, with lots of Microsoft users seeing the “blue screen of death.”

Airlines, banks, and telecom companies were among the businesses affected.

American Airlines, the world’s largest airline, said a technology problem was affecting many airlines. The Dutch part of Air France-KLM had to stop most of its operations.

Spain’s airport authority, AENA, warned travelers about delays due to a computer system problem. U.K. airline Ryanair also faced disruptions and advised passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their flight.

Banks and financial companies around the world also reported issues. The London Stock Exchange had problems with its data and news platform.

German finance company Allianz said it was experiencing a major outage that affected employees’ ability to log into their computers. This problem was caused by the CrowdStrike update and affected many companies.

A Visa spokesperson said that while their payment processing was not affected, they were aware of people having trouble making payments. They are working with their financial institution clients to understand the impact.

Omer Grossman, CIO at cybersecurity firm CyberArk, said the damage from this outage will be significant. He explained that the problem was due to a software update of CrowdStrike’s EDR product, which protects computers. A malfunction in this product can cause the operating system to crash, as seen in this incident.
