Overnight Millionaire: Indian Labourer Discovers Massive 19.22-Carat Diamond

In an extraordinary turn of events, an Indian labourer named Raju Gound has discovered a significant diamond in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh. The 19.22-carat gemstone is anticipated to fetch around 8 million rupees (approximately $95,570 or £74,000) at a government auction.

For over a decade, Mr. Gound has been leasing mines in Panna, a region renowned for its diamond reserves, in hopes of finding such a treasure. Many individuals and families in the area lease shallow mines from the government, often at a low cost of around 200-250 rupees, to search for diamonds using basic tools.

The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), a federal government body, operates a mechanized diamond mining project in Panna and also leases out these shallow mines. Any diamonds found are handed over to the government’s diamond office, where they are evaluated.

Mr. Gound mentioned that his family typically leases mines during the monsoon season, when other work in agriculture and masonry becomes scarce. The mine where this large diamond was found was leased by his father about two months ago in Krishna Kalyanpur Patti village near Panna.

Anupam Singh, an official at the state government’s diamond office, noted that while many smaller stones have been found, Mr. Gound's discovery stands out due to its size. He recalled a similar rare find in 2018, when a labourer from Bundelkhand unearthed a diamond worth 15 million rupees.

The discovered diamond will be sold at the next government auction, and Mr. Gound will receive his share after the deduction of government royalties and taxes. He plans to use the money to improve his family's living conditions, pay for his children’s education, and settle a debt of 500,000 rupees.

Despite the newfound wealth, Mr. Gound remains humble and focused. He plans to share the money with 19 relatives who live with him and is not worried about others knowing about his fortune. Looking ahead, he intends to continue searching for more diamonds.

"Tomorrow, I'll go to the mine again to look for diamonds," he said, reflecting his enduring hope and determination.
