Inside the theater, Harris addressed a packed audience and highlighted how Trump and his running mate, Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, are ramping up their attacks on her. They have criticized Harris, a former prosecutor, by suggesting she is soft on crime and illegal immigration. Vance also made controversial comments in 2021, describing Harris as one of the "childless cat ladies" who, he implied, do not understand the needs of biological parents.
“You may have noticed, Donald Trump has been resorting to some wild lies about my record,” Harris told the crowd. “And some of what he and his running mate are saying, well, it's just plain weird. I mean that's the box you put that in.”
Harris and her campaign are working to shift the narrative by drawing attention to some of Trump’s unusual statements and behaviors. After a recent Fox News appearance by Trump, Harris’ campaign released a press statement questioning, “Is Donald Trump ok?” and labeling him as “old and quite weird.”
In a similar vein, Harris' campaign also targeted Vance on social media, writing "JD Vance is weird and creepy," alongside a press release that highlighted Vance’s past comments on restricting abortion access.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is considered a potential running mate for Harris, has also used the term “weird” to describe Trump and Vance. Speaking on MSNBC, Walz said, “These guys are just weird. They’re running for He-Man women-haters’ club or something. That’s not what people are interested in.”
Harris also commented on Trump's recent decision to back out of a planned debate, originally scheduled against President Joe Biden. Biden has since endorsed Harris, making her the Democratic candidate. “You may have seen he just pulled out of our debate,” Harris said at the fundraiser, where she was introduced by musician James Taylor. “I hope he reconsiders because we have a lot to talk about.”
By adopting this new label, Harris aims to highlight what she sees as the eccentric and unpredictable nature of her opponents, as her campaign moves forward.
