In the email sent by X’s chief executive, Linda Yaccarino, the company informed employees that they would be moving to existing offices in San Jose, California. Additionally, X will open a new office focused on engineering in Palo Alto, California, which it will share with xAI, Mr. Musk's artificial intelligence company.
“This is an important decision that impacts many of you, but it is the right one for our company in the long term,” Ms. Yaccarino wrote.
Last month, Mr. Musk announced that he would move the company’s headquarters to Texas. This decision followed California passing a law that bans school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents if their children change their gender identification. Mr. Musk, who has had a rocky relationship with California, said the legislation would “force families and companies to leave California to protect their children.”
X, formerly known as Twitter, was founded in San Francisco in 2006. It moved its headquarters to the city’s Mid-Market neighborhood in 2012 after securing a payroll tax break deal with local legislators. Twitter became a symbol of the city’s tech industry, with companies like Uber also moving into the neighborhood.
Since Mr. Musk bought Twitter in 2022, the company has stopped paying rent to Shorenstein, the real estate company managing X’s office building at 1355 Market Street. X also tried to save money by converting some office space into bedrooms for traveling employees.
Mr. Musk and a representative for X did not respond to requests for comment. A spokeswoman for Shorenstein also declined to comment.
