American swimming star Ryan Murphy had double reason to celebrate on Tuesday at the Paris Olympics. He won a bronze medal and then learned about the gender of his upcoming child in a surprising way.
Murphy had just finished third in the men's 100m backstroke final and was greeting fans before the medal ceremony. While walking around the venue, he saw his wife holding up a white sign that said - "Ryan It's A Girl."
Many fans captured the moment on their phones. A video posted by one of the spectators has gone viral on social media.
“That’s a great way to find out. That really lit me up and brought this night to a whole other level. It’s really exciting to learn that I’m going to be a girl dad," Murphy told reporters after the medal ceremony.
The 29-year-old Murphy is an Olympic legend with 7 medals to his name - 5 individual titles and back-to-back wins in the 4x100-meter medley relay, first with Michael Phelps in Rio 2016 and then with a team that included Caeleb Dressel in Tokyo 2021.
Murphy started swimming as a young kid after his family moved from Chicago to Jacksonville, Florida. His siblings started swimming before him, and he wanted to compete with them.
“I was just the young kid running around with my life vest on, chomping at the bit so I could play with my older siblings,” he said before the Games.
