India’s largest crypto exchange, WazirX, was hacked, and over $1,900 crore worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen and transferred to an unknown wallet.
The hacker swapped Tether USDT tokens, Pepe tokens, and GALA into Ether.
The breach happened in WazirX’s multi-signature wallet, where multiple approvals are needed for transactions. WazirX has confirmed the hack and is investigating the incident.
Following the hack, WazirX has paused all INR and crypto withdrawals to protect users' assets. They stated, “To ensure the safety of your assets, INR and crypto withdrawals will be temporarily paused. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We'll keep you posted with further updates.”
Media reports show that the hacker used Tornado Cash, a crypto mixer, to hide their tracks. The stolen cryptocurrencies include approximately $100 million in Shiba Inu (SHIB), $52 million in Ethereum (ETH), $11 million in Polygon (MATIC), and various other tokens.
