Tesla Updates 1.85 Million Cars to Prevent Hood Issues

Tesla Releases Software Update to Prevent Hood Issues in 1.85 Million Car

Tesla Inc. has released a software update for 1.85 million cars in the US to prevent a potential issue where vehicle hoods could unexpectedly open while driving.

Starting June 18, Tesla began sending an over-the-air software update to detect if a car's hood is open and to alert the driver. This update affects Tesla Model S, X, 3, and Y vehicles produced from January 2020 to the present. The update aims to address concerns reported by customers.

According to a recall report posted on the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website, Tesla started investigating reports of "unintended hood opening events" in China in late March. By mid-April, they identified the problem: deformation of latch switches that could prevent the system from notifying drivers that their hoods were open.

Tesla noted that this issue has occurred more frequently in China compared to Europe and North America. As of July 20, Tesla has found three warranty claims or field reports related to this issue in the US, but there have been no reports of crashes, injuries, or deaths related to it. The company estimates that only 1% of the vehicles involved in the recall may have this defect.

In response to this news, Tesla's stock slipped 0.4% as of 6:25 a.m. Tuesday in New York. The stock has declined 6.6% this year, underperforming compared to the 15% gain in the S&P 500 Index.
