RNC 2024 Day 4 Live Updates: Trump Talks Unity and Revisits Past Grievances

On the last day of the Republican National Convention, former President Donald Trump gave an important speech. 

He said he would call for unity after an attempt on his life.But in his first speech since the incident, Trump focused on his usual topics. He criticized President Joe Biden, Democrats, and other critics on issues like the economy, immigration, and crime.

The night also had lively speeches from guests like Hulk Hogan and Eric Trump, who also criticized Biden and the Democrats.

While the stadium stayed full, some people in the crowd seemed tired from Trump’s long speech. One person even said, "I think we're almost there," to a friend next to her.

Trump mentioned a plan to build a "great Iron Dome" for defense. The GOP wants a missile defense system like Israel's Iron Dome, even though the military hasn't asked for it, and experts say it might not be very useful for the U.S.

Trump's message of unity didn't last long in his speech. He made false claims about the 2020 election and said immigrants were stealing jobs. He used the term "China virus," which has been linked to anti-Asian hate, and spoke about "partisan witch hunts" and called Nancy Pelosi "Crazy Nancy."

"There was a moment when the teleprompter froze for six minutes and other times when it scrolled to catch up with where Trump was in his speech. Even though he said he wouldn't mention Biden's name, he did several times.

'Chart Saved My Life'

During a rally, Trump showed a chart about undocumented migrants coming into the U.S. He said he was looking at this chart during an assassination attempt and credited it with saving his life. "Without that chart, I will not be here today," he said, and the crowd cheered.

'Trump Warns About Immigration'

In his speech, Trump talked a lot about immigration and crime. He argued that Biden's policies have created a big crisis. "The greatest invasion in history is happening in our country," he said. "They are coming from all over the world, not just from South America, but also Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. This administration does nothing to stop them," Trump added. 

He claimed that people coming include criminals, people from mental institutions, and terrorists.

'Trump's Family and VP Leave Their Seats'

Trump’s family and his VP pick, JD Vance, left their seats in the stadium, likely to join him on stage.

'Biden Adviser’s Response'

An adviser to President Biden told ABC News that Trump’s speech was "all about him, no plan for the future, exactly what people hate about politicians."
